2-Day Bobath Introductory Course

Introductory courses are offered to physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech & language therapists and doctors who work with children with cerebral palsy or who hope to work in pediatrics in the future.

The course is designed to give course participants insight into the use of the Bobath Concept through demonstrations, discussions and lectures. Because of the introductory nature of this course, there is no opportunity for practical handling by course participants but staff at the centre will demonstrate treatment.

Objectives:

• To familiarise participants with the basic concepts that underpin the Bobath approach to treatment.
• To demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of assessments and treatment using the Bobath approach.
• To discuss the implications of an understanding of child development to the treatment of cerebral palsy.
• To identify the features of spasticity, athetosis & ataxia and demonstrate the Bobath approach to treatment of children with these clinical features.

Basic Bobath Foundation Course (8 weeks)

This course is for physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech & language therapists and doctors who work with children with cerebral palsy or who hope to work in pediatrics in the future. It is designed to:

• Give an overview of the current theoretical background to the Bobath approach to the treatment of the child with cerebral palsy, through the study of neurosciences, syndrome classification, principals of assessment and treatment.
• Provide initial practical and clinical experience in the handling, assessment and management of children with cerebral palsy.
• Develop awareness of factors involved in problem solving and communication in all aspects of the treatment context, including the child, the parents, the therapists, the health and education teams.

Objectives:

To enable participants to:

• Discuss current knowledge and neuroanatomy, neurophysiology and neuropathology and relate this to children with cerebral palsy (C.P.).
• Apply the principles of normal and abnormal development to the management of children with C.P. A
• Apply the understanding of sensorimotor development and normal movement to the treatment of children with C.P.
• Identify features of different types of C.P. and classify children with C.P.
• Develop skills in assessment and analysis of problems with C.P.
• Develop Skills in effective application of handling techniques
• Plan rational and integrated programmes of management and develop skills of analytical clinical decision making.
• Design home programmes, educate and instruct carers.

Lectures and demonstrations of treatment are all given by qualified tutors of The Bobath Centre professional staff and the opportunity given to treat patients under supervision. Course Hours and Attendance

The two months of lectures and demonstrations take place from Monday to Friday each week between the hours of 09.00/09.30am to 5pm each day. During the course, participants will be assessed on their written work, practical work and verbal presentations. There will be occasions when home study is required over evenings and weekends. Full-time attendance is required to attain the standard.
