Alfie's Story

“The whole Bobath experience taught us that we’re not alone in this. The staff were so professional, pleasant and un-fazed by it all. Physically and emotionally, for Alfie and all of us, it was a fantastic experience. It really was a turning point for us – of acceptance of Alfie’s cerebral palsy and that, although life will be very different for him, it does not mean it will be bad.”

Right Start

Is your child aged between 2-6 and about to move into nursery or primary school? We may be able to provide funding for therapy that will help to support you and your child through this transition.

Right Start is a Bobath Scotland project funded by the Big Lottery. Through Right Start, we provide funding for a block of therapy sessions at our Glasgow centre for 15 children with cerebral palsy aged 2-6 every year.

For families that live outside the Glasgow area, we are also able to provide therapy sessions to a further 10 children aged 2-6 every year through our outreach programme. In 2018 our Right Start outreach will take place in East Lothian.

Background to Right Start

The transition to nursery or primary school can be concerning for parents. It may be the first time you have been separated from your child, and you may feel you lack information around your child’s transition to this new setting. Many parents are worried about the extent to which their child will be included in activities, and how their support needs will be fulfilled.

About Right Start

Right Start aims to better equip young children to start life in school or nursery, and to help parents be better able to support their child’s potential.

Therapy sessions offered through Right Start will be full of fun and encouraging activities that are designed to suit each child’s needs and abilities. It is also hoped that parents will be introduced to new skills in the care of their child. Right Start is also an opportunity for professionals working with a child to come together, as well as a chance for therapists to highlight other appropriate services to parents.

One of our Right Start parents wrote a blog about her experience of the project.

Right Start Outreach Programme

In 2018 we are also able to offer 10 families within the East Lothian area the opportunity to participate in our Right Start outreach programme. Families would be expected to attend one-hour sessions two to three times per week across four intermittent weeks between September 2018 and June 2019. The exact location of the programme is still to be confirmed.
